Training

Pontifex Consulting offers a portfolio of training activities for any organization wishing to embed Systems Thinking capacity into the way that organization operates. Organizations can choose both the breadth (number of employees involved) and depth (level of skills developed and utilized).

We offer training designed to work with any group within an organization (or across a community).

Our approach is to help build the overall Systems Thinking capacity by ensuring that nearly all of the organization (95% or more) can apply general Systems Thinking skills. This means they look for patterns of behavior that transcend the daily events. They treat the system as the cause of that behavior and not external forces. And they take the Big Picture view...by looking for how different parts of the system interconnect.

We will work with an organization to build the skills of a large portion (40-50%) to be able to map the system of interest, to look for unintended consequences to policies, to identify vicious cycles, and to understand the time delays inherent in making any systemic improvements.

We assume some portion of the organization can benefit from learning to build simple systems models. They can use these models to engage the senior leadership in scenario planning, policy testing...even in operationalizing the vision of the organization or community.

Sample training engagements include:

  1. BulletLeadership training for state politicians

  2. BulletSenior manager training for aerospace engineers

  3. BulletWildlife disease management training for National Park Service

  4. BulletCoaching/mentoring for state health organizations

We develop products for you to sell or distribute to your clients, either on CDs or as internet-based simulations (Netsims). With several years experience in designing effective training experiences, we are a full-service development team that can help not only with the product, but in designing user guides, supporting curriculum pieces, and even appropriate multimedia that enhances learning.

What our clients say...

I have been teaching systems thinking and ithink mapping/modeling to MBA graduate students for 10 years; thus my learning agenda in the isee systems webinar was to improve my own presentation skills as well as learn how to connect more effectively to the new ST/SD learner... The webinar design provided a distinctive set of thinking, mapping and modeling basics including the demonstrations, the homework exercises, and the supplemental readings. Most important to me, however, was his exceptional skill in presenting the ease-of-use lessons on basic mapping/simulation and his ability to empathize with the beginner's frame of thinking. Chris is indeed a talented teacher in the systems thinking and basic modeling arena.

"In the workshop, Chris brings Systems Thinking to life. He teaches the concepts and skills so they are easily understandable without over-simplifying them. And he does this with a passion, warmth and sense of humor that makes learning enjoyable."

Roger Schwarz, author of

The Skilled Facilitator

Chris came to us highly recommended by a trusted partner, The Boeing Company, and his work more than supported the recommendation. Through interviews, phone conversations and written responses, Chris was able to assess the particular aspects of workforce development throughout our community's stakeholder groups, including business, government, education, community organizations and social and health services. But beyond that, he applied his expertise in systems thinking and workforce dynamics so we could not only understand our system but also identify the best opportunities to achieve the change we want. Chris's work has been validated by other studies that have looked at parts of the organization or system, but no other resource has been able to put the whole picture together for us. The final product and Chris's facilitation of a community-wide meeting to review the systems diagram have positioned us to take action with the confidence that what we do will be effective beyond what we could have done without his help.
