The Strategic ForumTM - Collaborating for Change

The Strategic Forum is a Systems Thinking based approach to change management. Pontifex Consulting contributed a chapter to the first edition of The Change Handbook (1998, Berrett-Koehler). You can purchase a copy of this chapter by clicking on the cover.

Pontifex Consulting has also written a white paper that is included in the more recent edition of The Change Handbook (2003, Berrett-Koehler) and is part of their Fast Fundamentals series. You may purchase a copy of this white paper by clicking on the image.

Systems Thinking for Warranty Strategy

Systems Thinking is an excellent approach for developing and testing strategies under multiple scenarios. This document describes how to apply Systems Thinking to issues associated with your warranty strategy. The approach described in this article is transferable to strategies for other areas besides warranty.

Netsims

The following interactive, online simulations provide you with a sample of the types of Netsims we can develop in support of your organizational objectives.  Click on the netsim image to experience a specific Netsim (or YouTube video of that sim).

Calculating Reserves of Oil

One of the drivers of a non-renewable commodity's impacts of price (through supply and demand dynamics) is the availability of supply...particularly the long-term supply limit. There are varying estimates of how much oil remains, both the ultimate limit and the accessible (at least economically viable) limit. Geologists use a formula called Reserves to Production (R/P) to forecast how many years supply remains. This NetSim analyzes the R/P formula, as well as others, for estimating how many years of oil we may expect. Far from being an accurate prediction, this analysis is presented to improve our ability to think critically about forecasting formulas in general, and the applicability of Systems Thinking to building that critical thinking capacity.

Embeddable CO2 simulation

This simulation helps learn the basic bathtub dynamics associated with climate change.  Learners experience this concept interactively, and then see what policy options best address this structural-based dynamic.

Oil Dynamics

Developed in June of 2008, when oil had reached $140/barrel and the presidential election was in full swing, this NetSim was designed to build understanding of the structural causes o
f oil price swings and the implications of policies on the table to alleviate the painful results of those swings. Even though prices have decreased by at least 50% from those highs, the underlying market structure of a non-renewable commodity suggest that we will be revisiting this issue in the not too distant future.

Systems Thinking for Sustainable Consumption Strategy

This presentation was given at the UN's Sustainable Consumption Program in May 2010.  The presentation describes the challenges for creating such strategies, and how Systems Thinking can address them.
